November is a transitional month in Sri Lanka, but conditions improve noticeably compared to October. The south and west coasts begin to open for the season, the Cultural Triangle remains warm and mostly dry, and the Hill Country is cool and misty with occasional showers. The east coast winds down fully, with rough seas and limited beach time.

November is a workable month with mixed weather, but it’s also quieter and more affordable than the peak season that follows.

Seasonal Highlights in November

  • Quieter Travel Before Peak Season
November sits right before the December rush, so major sites like Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Galle Fort feel calmer and more spacious.
  • Better Value for Accommodation
Prices on the south and west coasts are still lower than peak season, but the weather is already improving — a sweet spot for budget‑savvy travellers.
  • Whale Watching Begins in Mirissa
The whale‑watching season typically starts in late November, with blue whales and sperm whales appearing off the south coast as seas calm.
  • Lush Landscapes After the Rains
The Hill Country and Cultural Triangle look especially green and fresh, with waterfalls running strong after the October rains.
  • Improving Surf on the South Coast
Weligama and Hiriketiya start to pick up consistent surf again as the season shifts.

Weather Overview

November brings improving conditions, especially in the south and west, with better beach weather on those coasts, warm and mostly dry days in the Cultural Triangle, cool and misty afternoons in the Hill Country, and rough seas with rain on the east coast, while humidity stays high but overall conditions are more stable than in October.
