Nha Trang: An Honest Guide – 7 best things to do

Last updated

Is Nha Trang just another seaside city, or does it truly stand out? Sure, it has stunning beaches, the ancient Po Nagar Cham Towers, and those famous mud baths—but there’s more to it than that.

Walk around town, and you’ll quickly notice something funny: if you’re white, locals might greet you in Russian. If you’re Asian and not obviously Vietnamese, expect some Korean! Thanks to waves of tourism, Nha Trang has its own unique quirks, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a visit.

In this post, I’ll give you an honest guide to enjoying the city—beyond the usual tourist traps—including the best spots, unexpected experiences, and nearby escapes that make Nha Trang more than just another beach town.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Nha Trang is during the dry season, which runs from February to August. However, the ideal months are January to April, as the weather is warm but slightly cooler and more comfortable compared to the peak summer months. It’s best to avoid the period between October and December, as heavy rain and storms are common.

What to do in Nha Trang?

The best things to do in Nha Trang include relaxing on its beautiful beaches, exploring ancient temples, soaking in mud baths, visiting nearby islands home to hundreds of monkeys, and checking out local markets for a glimpse into daily life.

Enjoy the beaches of Nha Trang

Beaches, beaches, and more beaches—Nha Trang is known for them. Among all of them, the most beautiful beach, in my opinion, is on Monkey Island. Below is a list of beaches in Nha Trang that are definitely worth your while.

  • Nha Trang Beach – Lively with restaurants and bars, but can get crowded and dirty, though generally maintained.
  • Bai Dai Beach – Quieter with beach bars, cleaner than the city beach but can still have some litter.
  • Hon Chong Beach – Less crowded, great for sunsets and rock formations, relatively clean but may have occasional debris.
  • Doc Let Beach – Beautiful white sand and clear water, cleaner and less touristy, ideal for a peaceful escape.
  • Jungle Beach – Remote and quiet, usually clean with fewer visitors, though some litter may appear in isolated spots.

Cam Dom Market: A Cool Local Spot to Experience

I personally enjoy seeing how locals live and spend their time in different places, and local markets provide the perfect insight into their lives. You might spot someone lounging in a hammock surrounded by hundreds of watermelons or find other unique scenes. Another great experience is eating with the locals—choose a spot popular with Vietnamese people to get a true taste of their culture.

Night Market

The night market is tailored for tourists, offering typical souvenirs that make great gifts for loved ones back home. You’ll also find plenty of local snacks to enjoy while strolling through the market. It’s definitely worth a visit, but don’t expect anything out of the ordinary.

Discovering the countryside with a motorbike

One of my personal favorites in Vietnam is renting a motorbike and exploring the nearby countryside. The tranquil scenery of rice fields offers a calming escape. You can easily rent a motorbike at your hotel or a nearby rental shop and discover the beautiful surroundings of Nha Trang at your own pace.

Monkey Island (Hòn Lao)

Monkey Island in Nha Trang was my favorite activity here since I love watching monkeys interact. The island also offers, in my opinion, the best beach. The beach is breathtaking, with crystal-clear water shimmering in various shades of blue under the sun. Located about 20 km from central Nha Trang, the island is accessible by tour, Grab, or motorbike. I chose to ride there myself, which made the trip even more fun. You can easily reach the port Bến tàu du lịch Long Phú and then take the ferry to the island. You can also go to the Orchid Island from the same port.

I’d recommend bringing bananas for the monkeys, along with water, sunscreen, a towel and a bathing suit for yourself. Monkeys can be a bit wild. The staff tries to control them to some extent, but they are still unpredictable. If you choose to feed them, do so carefully, but don’t tease them for your own safety.

They also have a monkey shows , but it’s not really encouraged to watch for ethical reasons.

Price for ferry to Monkey Island and Orchid Island 2025

  • The round-trip ticket to Monkey Island costs ₫180,000 (₫100,000 for a child),
  • Orchid Island, it costs ₫240,000 (₫150,000 for a child)

Tháp Bà Mud Bath

Before visiting, I considered waiting for the rain to roll around in the mud for free, but after experiencing Tháp Bà Mud Bath, I quickly realized it offers a much more refined and relaxing experience.

You begin by changing into your bathing suit and heading to the mud bath. The mud is a little thicker than water and provides a very relaxing experience. It’s mineral-rich and designed to detoxify your skin, improve circulation, and even relieve joint pain. While I’m not sure about the scientific proof of these benefits, I certainly felt more relaxed afterward.

In addition to the mud bath, you can enjoy the pool and even treat yourself to a massage.

So, while rolling in the mud on a rainy day might be free, Tháp Bà Mud Bath is definitely worth the visit for the pampering, health benefits, and unique experience it offers. It’s not just about mud; it’s about wellness and luxury.

Po Nagar Cham Towers

Located right in the center of Nha Trang and on the same side of the bridge as the mud bath, the Po Nagar Cham Towers are definitely worth a visit—unless you’re allergic to history, in which case, maybe skip it. These ancient towers were built back in the 7th century by the Cham people and were dedicated to the Hindu goddess Po Nagar. They’re a cool piece of history and a perfect spot to take in some great views of Nha Trang. You’ll find some amazing carvings and brickwork here, plus a peaceful atmosphere that’s a nice break from the usual hustle of the city. It’s a quick trip from the center, and honestly, it’s a great way to learn a little about Vietnam’s history without falling asleep in the process.

Where to stay?

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly stay in Nha Trang without compromising comfort, Regalia Hotel is an excellent choice. Just 50 meters from the beach, its prime location lets you enjoy the ocean breeze and easy access to the city’s vibrant coastal activities. The rooms are clean and comfortable, offering great value for their price, while the hotel’s breakfast spread is surprisingly generous—perfect for fueling a day of exploration. Whether you’re relaxing on the nearby sands or enjoying the city, Regalia Hotel provides a cozy, convenient, and affordable stay.
