Da Lat Best Things to Do & When to Visit

Last updated

With its cool climate, fewer tourists, and the scenic Xuan Huong Lake, Da Lat offers a peaceful retreat from Vietnam’s heat. The city’s charm is best experienced at a slower pace—sometimes the best way to enjoy Da Lat is just to chill. Stroll around the quiet streets, relax by the lake, or sip coffee at one of the cozy cafes. It’s a place where you can take it easy and soak in the laid-back vibe.

For those who want a bit more excitement, Da Lat has something for you too. Thrill-seekers can enjoy the famous alpine roller coaster, winding through lush forests to scenic waterfalls and great hiking in the nearby area.

When to visit

Thanks to its 1,500-meter altitude, Dalat enjoys a much cooler climate than the rest of central and southern Vietnam. While daytime temperatures are mild and pleasant year-round, nights can get quite cold—definitely bring pants and a sweater. I recommend visiting between November and April, when the weather is at its best, with minimal rain and comfortable temperatures.

How Long to Stay in Dalat?

Whether you’re here for relaxation or adventure, a 2–3 day trip is perfect for experiencing Da Lat’s highlights. I spent 3 days here, and it felt just right—not too short, not too long. I had plenty of time to explore the sights and experiences, all at a relaxed pace. No stress.

Is Da Lat Worth it?

Yes! Dalat has a laid-back charm, with fewer tourists and friendly, curious locals. It’s a great place to slow down, explore at your own pace, and soak in the unique atmosphere. Whether you’re into nature, food, or just unwinding, Dalat offers a peaceful retreat with beautiful landscapes, interesting sights, and a welcoming vibe that sets it apart from other destinations in Vietnam. If you are going to Sapa or Bac Ha, you will experience the mountains there, so no need to go to the beautiful city of Dalat.

Best things to do in Da Lat

1. Rent a Motorbike & Explore

Renting a motorbike is one of the best ways to explore Da Lat and its surroundings. The city is surrounded by winding mountain roads, pine forests, waterfalls, and scenic viewpoints, making it a great place for a ride. I rented a motorbike and visited several sights, including hidden waterfalls, peaceful lakes, and countryside villages. Just keep in mind that Da Lat’s cool temperatures can make riding chilly, so bringing a jacket is a good idea!

Price: 100 – 150 k for a day.

2. Ride the Alpine Coaster to Datanla Waterfall

For a fun and scenic way to reach Datanla Waterfall, take a ride on Alpine Coaster 3, the longest track available. The coaster winds through lush pine forests, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings as you make your way down. You control the speed, so you can take it slow and steady or pick up the pace for a little extra excitement. I tried to max out the speed, but quickly realized that the cart brakes automatically, if you ride too fast. At the bottom of the ride, you’ll find the beautiful Datanla Waterfall, where you can explore the cascades or try other activities like ziplining. It’s a touristy spot, but the longer ride and peaceful forest setting make it a nice experience.

Price: 250 k adult / 150 k child

3. Relax by Xuan Huong Lake & Flower Garden

Right in the heart of Da Lat, Xuan Huong Lake is a peaceful spot perfect for a walk, run, or a coffee break at one of the many lakeside cafés. The lake is surrounded by pine trees and flower gardens, making it a great place to unwind and enjoy the fresh highland air. Whether you visit in the early morning with the mist over the water or in the evening when the city lights reflect on the surface, it’s a relaxing escape from the city’s bustle.

Not far from the lake, you’ll find the Da Lat Flower Garden, a colorful park filled with various flower species, bonsai trees, and themed gardens. It’s a great place to visit if you enjoy nature and photography, especially during the annual Da Lat Flower Festival.

4. Linh Phuoc Pagoda

Linh Phuoc Pagoda, located about 6 km east of Da Lat’s city center, is renowned for its intricate architecture and the impressive 49-meter (160-foot) dragon sculpture. I had the chance to visit during Vietnamese New Year, Tết, a time when the pagoda was alive with vibrant decorations, the scent of incense, and joyful celebrations. The festive energy made the experience even more special.

5. Visit Domaine de Marie

First sight was Domaine De Marie, which is a charming pink church with French colonial and Vietnamese architectural influences, making it one of Da Lat’s most recognizable landmarks. Located on a small hill, it offers a peaceful setting with beautiful gardens and a nice view over the city. While it’s a quick stop, it’s worth visiting if you enjoy history and architecture.

6. Visit the night market

Located in the center of Da Lat, the night market comes alive every evening with street food, local crafts, and a lively atmosphere. It’s a great place to try Bò Né, a sizzling Vietnamese beef platter served on a hot metal plate with eggs, pâté, and a crispy baguette. Other must-try foods include grilled rice paper (Vietnamese pizza),and Da Lat’s famous avocado ice cream. You’ll also find plenty of souvenirs, handmade clothing, and warm jackets, which can be useful on Da Lat’s chilly nights. Even if you’re not shopping, the market is worth a visit just to experience the bustling energy and local flavors.

7. Hike in the Langbiang mountain

A great spot for a hike with nice views at the top. The trail is steep, but it’s not too difficult if you take your time. There’s also the option to take a jeep up if you don’t feel like walking. At the top, you get a panoramic view of Dalat and the surrounding hills. Worth it if you enjoy nature and don’t mind a bit of a workout.

Where to stay in Da Lat

Da Lat has plenty of cozy homestays to choose from. I wanted to stay centrally and opted for Lemongrass Homestay, which offered a pleasant and homely atmosphere. Keep in mind that there’s no heating, but they provide plenty of blankets to keep you warm on chilly nights. Otherwise, I met other travelers staying at the accommodations below and can highly recommend them.

Crazy House

  • Price: $$
  • Best for: Anybody that wants to stay in a house with unique architecture.

Famous for its crazier architecture. Located in Dalat just 3.1 km from Dalat Train Station, still centrally located though. All the rooms are unique and are made by a local architect. You can also just visit this place if you just want to have a peek at the style of the house.

How to get here

You can reach Da Lat by air or land.

  • Direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang arrive at Lien Khuong Airport, about 30 km from the city center.
  • Buses to Da Lat are available from several cities, including Ho Chi Minh City (6–8 hours), Nha Trang (3.5 hours), Mui Ne (4–5 hours), and Da Nang (14–16 hours).

I took a Futabus from Nha Trang, which arrives at Da Lat Bus Station, just 10 minutes from downtown.
