Think Sigiriya is just one rock? Think again. This ancient region hides three epic hikes—ancient ruins, stunning sunrise views, and a mysterious forest monastery little outside the town. History, nature, or views—you’ll find it all here.

Sigiriya Hikes offers three unique experiences:

  • Lion Rock, the iconic 200-meter fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Pidurangala Rock, which offers stunning sunrise views of Lion Rock
  • Ritigala, an ancient forest monastery and hidden historical gem

In this guide, you’ll find what it’s like to hike each spot, how touristy they are, how hard they are, the best times to go, and whether they’re worth the effort and cost.

General tip for Sigiriya Hikes: If you’re traveling around after sunset, be careful on the roads—wild elephants sometimes roam nearby as they come out of the forest.

Sigiriya Lion Rock Hike – The Prize of All Sigiriya Hikes

This ancient royal citadel sits atop a dramatic rock column and includes gardens, cave paintings, and sweeping summit views.

The Story Behind Lion Rock

Sigiriya was built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century, who feared revenge after overthrowing and murdering his father. Instead of building a palace in the traditional capital, he chose to create a fortress atop Lion Rock for security. He built elaborate water gardens, a lion-shaped gateway, and had artists decorate the caves with frescoes. After his death, the site became a monastery again.

What to Expect?

  • The climb itself takes 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • I spent about 3.5 hours here, with time for the museum, photos, and breaks
  • Crowds can slow you down, especially on the narrow staircases
  • Entrance is $35 USD for foreigners
  • It’s expensive (about 100x more than locals pay), but after climbing it, I’m glad I went. It’s a UNESCO site with a lot to see:
    • Museum
    • Cave frescoes
    • Fortress ruins at the summit
  • Expect a lot of monkeys around the site.

Is Lion Rock Hard to Climb?

Lion Rock is moderately easy for most people with average fitness. The trail is well-marked with steps and railings, though the top section is steep and a bit exposed. Just go slow and wear proper shoes.

When to hike Sigiriya Lion Rock

  • Sunrise option: Start the hike around 5:30 AM
  • Sunset option: Arrive at the ticket gate around 16:30–16:45 (last entry is at 17:00)
  • Both times avoid the worst of the heat and crowds

Pidurangala Rock Hike – View of Lion Rock

Pidurangala is the go-to sunrise hike in Sigiriya, offering panoramic views of Lion Rock bathed in golden light. It’s cheaper, quieter, and slightly more rugged than Lion Rock. If you’re planning to climb both, start with Pidurangala—seeing Lion Rock from a distance first makes the experience even more rewarding.

What to Expect

  • A 20–40 minute one-way climb depending on your fitness
  • The last section requires scrambling over rocks
  • Wear shoes with good grip, and go slow if you’re unfit
  • Entrance fee is 1000 LKR (~$3 USD) for foreigners.

When to Go

  • Arrive at the base by 5:30 AM
  • I reached the top at 5:55 AM and it was already busy

Tip: Stay close to Pidurangala. I stayed 30 minutes away and had to get up at 4:15 AM. Driving in the dark isn’t ideal due to elephant risk.

Ritigala Hike – Forest Ruins & Solitude

Ritigala is an ancient Buddhist monastery tucked deep into a forest, about an hour from Sigiriya. It’s peaceful, mysterious, and less touristy—but still rewarding.

Go with a guide. Without one, Ritigala might just seem like a pile of old stones. But with a guide, the ruins come alive—revealing centuries of history, symbolism, and forgotten rituals. Local guides are usually available at the entrance and are well worth the small fee.

The Sacred Silence of Ritigala

Ritigala is tied to ancient Buddhist legends and even the Ramayana epic. It’s believed that Hanuman, the monkey god, dropped part of a Himalayan mountain here while flying to save Lord Rama’s brother. This myth explains the presence of rare herbs on Ritigala not found anywhere else in Sri Lanka.

These stories add a layer of magic to your hikes—what looks like stone ruins and jungle paths were once royal hideouts and sacred retreats.

What to Expect

  • Shaded forest trail with ruins of a temple, meditation platforms, a hospital, and a library
  • Birds chirping, gentle breezes, and jungle atmosphere
  • The roads to Ritigala are in poor condition—a tuk-tuk can handle it, but plan extra time
  • It’s roughly 45 km from Sirigiya and takes about 1.5 hours one way.

When to Go?

Since most of the Ritigala trail is shaded by forest, you can hike it at almost any time of day. If you’re doing all three hikes in one day, Ritigala is a good midday option—it will be hot, but the tree cover offers some relief. Alternatively, you can save it for a separate day to enjoy it more leisurely.

Suggested Hiking Order

To make the most of your time and hike everything in a day I would recommend the following:

  1. Start with Pidurangala at sunrise
  2. Have breakfast
  3. Visit Ritigala mid-morning or after lunch (One-way drive to Ritigala is around 1.5 hours)
  4. Finish the day with a sunset hike up Lion Rock

This way, you catch the best light and avoid the mid-day heat and crowds.

Plan Smart for the Best Sigiriya Hikes

Before you lace up your shoes and hit the trails, a bit of planning can make your Sigiriya hiking experience smoother, safer, and a lot more enjoyable. From what to pack to how to get there, here are the essential tips you need to know.

General Tips for Sigiriya Hikes

  • Bring cash – smaller places don’t accept cards
  • Stay near Pidurangala or Sigiriya to make early hikes easier
  • Avoid hiking or driving in the dark due to wildlife, especially elephants
  • Don’t rely on PickMe or ride apps – they often don’t work in this rural area
  • Don’t feed monkeys – they’ll remember you!

What to Pack for Sigiriya Hikes

Whether you’re climbing Lion Rock, catching sunrise at Pidurangala, or wandering the forest paths of Ritigala, a little preparation goes a long way. Here’s what to bring:

  • Water – Essential, especially for Lion Rock and Pidurangala
  • Snacks – Light and packable (avoid anything that’ll attract monkeys)
  • Hiking shoes or sandals with grip – Especially important for Pidurangala’s rock scramble
  • Sun cover – A hat, cap, or light scarf for shade
  • Sunscreen – The sun gets intense by mid-morning
  • Insect repellent – Particularly for Ritigala’s forested areas
  • Camera or phone – The views are too good not to capture
  • Extra battery or power bank – No outlets on mountaintops
  • Cash – For entry fees, tuk-tuks, and small purchases
  • Modest clothing – Shoulders and knees must be covered at the temple entrance on Pidurangala
  • Flashlight or phone light – Helpful if starting Pidurangala before sunrise

Where to Stay in Sigiriya

There are plenty of guesthouses and small hotels near both Sigiriya and Pidurangala. Staying nearby lets you start your hikes early and rest between climbs.

How to Get to Sigiriya

From Colombo or Negombo, it takes about 5–6 hours by bus. Options include:

  1. Bus to Dambulla or Inamaluwa, then local transport to Sigiriya
  2. Taxi or car via PickMe (works better in big cities)
  3. Drive your own tuk-tuk – a fun and flexible way to explore. Read my post about h
