- West Coast: Negombo town, Bentota, Kalutara, Hikkaduwa
- Cultural Triangle: Sigiriya Town for Lion Rock, Dambulla Cave Temples, Polonnaruwa
- Hill Country: Kandy town, Ella town, Nuwara Eliya
These areas all offer predictable weather and smooth travel conditions.
National Parks in January
January is a strong wildlife month across most of Sri Lanka because the major parks sit in dry‑zone regions that aren’t affected by the east‑coast monsoon. Conditions are generally good for safaris, but it’s not a peak month.
Excellent Conditions
- Udawalawe — reliable elephant viewing year‑round, especially good now
Decent Conditions
- Yala — early dry‑season conditions with active wildlife and good leopard sightings
- Minneriya / Kaudulla / Hurulu — good wildlife, though not “Gathering” season
- Wilpattu — December is the wettest month; January is already drying and generally good for leopard spotting safaris. But check with locals about the weather condititions before deciding.
Not Recommended
- Kumana — northeast monsoon still active

January is peak season, and it feels like it. Accommodation prices rise, popular hotels book out early, and scenic train routes can fill weeks in advance. If you’re travelling in the first half of the month, planning and booking ahead makes a noticeable difference.
