Planning a Safari in Sri Lanka? Use this national parks map of Sri Lanka to get an overview of the national parks and see which ones offer the best wildlife experiences.

In this guide, youโ€™ll learn what animals each national park is known for, when theyโ€™re in season, and which ones are actually worth visiting. Iโ€™ll also cover a lesserโ€‘known highlight, the Elephant Transit Home, which is a ethical sanctuary for baby elephants that many travelers miss.

Quick Sri Lanka Safari Guide

  • Want to see leopards? You got two options: Yala National Park, which has the highest leopard density, and Wilpattu National Park, which is much less touristy but still offers excellent leopard-spotting potential.
  • Want to see huge gatherings of elephants? Visit Minneriya National Park during the dry season for โ€˜The Gathering,โ€™ when hundreds of elephants come together.
  • Want to visit an Ethical Baby Elephant Transit Home? Sure you do, it’s located in Udawalawe National Park.

Sri Lanka’s National Parks

Sri Lanka has more than 20 national parks, but most travelers visit only a select few. The majority of tourists stick to the well-known parks with reliable wildlife sightings and good infrastructure, while many of the others remain relatively untouched or are focused more on conservation than tourism.

The most visited or most worthwhile parks include:

  • Yala โ€“ Famous for its leopards and dramatic landscapes. It’s the most popular park and has the highest leopard density of all national parks in Sri Lanka.
  • Wilpattu โ€“ A quieter, more remote park with excellent leopardโ€‘spotting potential and far fewer tourists than other national parks. My own visit was fantastic, and Iโ€™ve written a full Wilpattu National Park Review if you want the deeper dive.
  • Minneriya โ€“ Best visited during the dry season, when โ€œThe Gatheringโ€ occurs โ€” hundreds of elephants coming together in one place.
  • Udawalawe โ€“ Known for its consistent elephant sightings year-round.
  • Gal Oya โ€“ Sri Lankaโ€™s only park with boat safaris and very few crowds.
  • Horton Plains โ€“ Beautiful hiking scenery.

When the National Parks Are in Season for Safaris

Choosing the Right National Park for Your Sri Lanka Safari

For Spotting Leopards

If your main goal is to see leopards, you essentially have two options: Yala National Park and Wilpattu National Park.

Yala has the highest density of leopards in Sri Lanka, which means the best statistical chance of spotting one. The downside is the crowds. When a leopard appears, youโ€™ll often be sitting in a jeep with five or six other people, surrounded by fifteen to twenty jeeps all trying to get a glimpse. Itโ€™s exciting, but itโ€™s not exactly a quiet wildlife moment.

If you prefer a more secluded and natural experience, consider Wilpattu National Park. Itโ€™s much larger, more rugged, and far less visited. The leopard population is lower, so sightings are less frequent, but the atmosphere is calmer and more authentic. You trade quantity for quality: fewer jeeps, more wilderness, and a safari that feels closer to nature.

You can visit both parks as a day trip from Colombo, but itโ€™s more common to visit Wilpattu National Park from Anuradhapura or Sigiriya, and Yala from Arugam Bay.

For Spotting Elephants

If your main goal is to see elephants, you have three strong options: Minneriya National Park, Kaudulla National Park, and Udawalawe National Park.

Minneriya and Kaudulla sit next to each other in the Cultural Triangle, and they function as a pair. Rangers decide daily which park has the better elephant activity, so your โ€œMinneriya safariโ€ may actually take place in Kaudulla. During Julyโ€“OCtober, hundreds of elephants come to the reservoirs, making it one of the largest natural elephant gatherings in the world. Itโ€™s the best place to see huge herds, family groups, and calves all in one area.

Another option for reliable sightings yearโ€‘round is Udawalawe National Park. Unlike Minneriya and Kaudulla, Udawalawe has a large resident elephant population, so you donโ€™t rely on seasonal movements. The open landscapes also make it easier to see elephants up close.

Udawalawe is also home to the Elephant Transit Home, an ethical rehabilitation center for 40-50 orphaned baby elephants.

I recommend prioritizing Minneriya and Kaudulla if youโ€™re traveling during the season of the โ€œGatheringโ€. Outside those months, Udawalawe together with the Elephant Transit Home is a better choice.

Common Questions About Safaris in Sri Lanka’s National Parks

I’m in Sigiriya and want to see leopards, which national park should I go to?

If you’re staying in Sigiriya and hoping to see leopards, your best option is Wilpattu National Park. Itโ€™s about a 2.5โ€“3 hour drive from Sigiriya and is known for a less crowded leopard-spotting safari. Unlike the more crowded Yala, Wilpattu offers a quieter safari experience with a good chance of spotting leopards, especially during early morning or late afternoon game drives.

Can I visit a national park from Sigiriya in half a day?

Yes! Minneriya, Kaudulla, and Hurulu Eco Park all offer 3โ€“4 hour safaris, easily done in a morning or afternoon from Sigiriya.

Can I visit a safari as a day trip from Colombo?

A safari day trip from Colombo is possible, but expect 6โ€“8 hours of total driving depending on the park, and on top of that the drive to the park. If you want a more relaxed experience, itโ€™s better to stay closer to the park (e.g., Sigiriya for Wilpattu and Minneriya/Kaudulla, Ella or the south for Udawalawe, Arugam Bay for Yala).

Which national parks should I visit?

Iโ€™d recommend visiting either Yala or Wilpattu for leopard spotting, and adding Minneriya/Kaudulla for the large elephant gatherings if youโ€™re traveling during the season (July to October).

Which national park should I visit from Arugam Bay?

The closest national park to Arugam Bay is Yala National Park, which has the highest density of leopards in Sri Lanka. Itโ€™s the best place in the country for leopard sightings, and you can also see elephants along with many other animals such as crocodiles, deer, buffalo, and a wide range of birdlife.

Typical safari info:

  • Duration: 3โ€“4 hours for halfday or 8-12 hours for full day
  • Pickup from your hotel
  • Shared or private jeeps
